ORNATE IRON FENCE DISCOVERED.

Recently, while photographing Richmond’s historic railroad district, I  noticed  an old interesting iron fence. Upon further investigation, I discovered  the local manufacturer’s name plate  on the gate…

 

SAMUEL MARLATT,  BLACKSMITH;  MANUFACTURED FANCY IRON FENCE, GATES, RAILINGS, SHUTTERS AND  DOORS AT 123 FORT WAYNE AVENUE. 123 Ft. Wayne Avenue (in 1877) was located in the triangular section where Warner school (1957) is now. Behind Marlatt’s  Blacksmith  Works,  (facing North 6th Street) was the old Friends Hicksite Meeting House. The Friends  property faced North 6th and was  situated  at the alley, between 6th & 7th Streets.

Iron Fence Manufacture.”Samuel Marlatt commenced a general blacksmithing business at No. 123 Fort Wayne avenue in 1877. He is now principally engaged in the manufacture of iron fences, railings, shutters, doors, etc., both of plain and fancy designs.

Samuel Marlatt was a City Councilman under Mayor James Elder in 1873 (2nd Ward); Was again 2nd Ward Councilman (Mayor John L. Rupe) in 1883-’84.
